WEEK 11 - THE AFTERMATH

NFC EAST

BYE PHILLY BYE - Super Bowl hangover? No, these dudes never put the juice down. The culture and atmosphere in Philadelphia has now probably turned into tension spilling into turmoil. (10) games in and the defending Super Bowl champs are (4-6) and have lost 2 of 3 games. Their 41 point blowout at the hands of the Saints Sunday was the largest point loss by a defending SB champ ever. QB Carson Wentz who looked like the only consistency they have had been turnover prone with (6) turnovers over the last 3 weeks. No rushing attack as they sure could use LaGarrette Blount back, ranking 25th in the NFL. Missing offensive coordinator Frank Reich and QB's coach John Defillippo is evident as a team that was scoring almost (30) points per game and ranked (3rd) in total offense in 2017; ranks (25th) in 2018 averaging (20.8) points per. Their defense got gashed for (173) yards on the ground Sunday, a difference compared to when they ranked #1 against the run in 2017. Philly has their next 3 games all versus the NFC East, either put up or shut up.

WOES IN WASHINGTON - The Washington Redskins went in favor of a new direction at quarterback trading for Alex Smith and departing from the Kirk Cousins era. Smith with his conservative play an all, has Washington atop of the NFC East at (6-4); however, with Smith going down for the season with a leg injury, how will the Redskins look the final (6) games of the season? In comes backup QB Colt McCoy. McCoy who is (7-18) as a starter has sat behind some good QB's in his time in Washington and knows head coach Jay Gruden offenses thoroughly. Being thrown into the fire without starting a game since 2015 is a different story. Washington was not the most prolific offense under Smith. TE Jordan Reed is their leading receiver as they are run dominant and defensively strong. Led by Adrian Peterson (6) rushing touchdowns, they average (121.5) rush yards per game. While on defense they are (2nd) in the NFL in creating turnovers with (26); something they will need a large dose of if they have any shot at holding on to the division lead. I guess Colin Kaepernick wasn't available?

GIANT STEPS - Eli Manning had one of his most efficient games in some seasons going (17/18) while adding (2) touchdown passes as the Giants held on to beat the Bucs Sunday. The Giants scored 38 points and have not scored that much in almost (3) seasons. OBJ claimed the Giants were going to win every game a couple weeks ago in hopes of making it to the playoffs. 2 wins down; 6 to go. Led by rookie RB Saquan Barkley who had a career game rushing the ball (27 times / 147 / 3 total TDs). Barkley became the first Giants rookie since (1982) to have a rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game. Odell Beckham Jr. found the end zone for his (5th) time in six games. Manning was sacked another (4) times, adding to his league leading (36) sacks. Manning's offensive line has been a struggle to say the least all season, but over the last two games have stepped up when needed. New York's defense has rose to the occasion, winning on 4th down and in late game situations as they rank (27th) in the NFL. New York will need to play lights out down the final stretch for any postseason shot.

COWBOYS CRUISIN' - Ever since that Monday Night Football debacle where the Dallas Cowboys season looked to be over after falling to the Titans at home, Dallas has somehow speared off (2) straight victories. RB Ezekiel Elliott totaled over (200) yards from scrimmage as the Cowboys are now even at (5-5) for the season. Dallas is now just a game back of Washington in the NFC East standings. Elliott is now touching the ball more, getting at least (20-25) touches a game. That is just rushing the ball. Cowboys are (4th) in the NFL rushing the football. Establishing the run is the Cowboys guarantee to success in their offense. Their offensive line has Dak Prescott, just second to Eli Manning in getting sacked this season. Trading for WR Amari Cooper has paid dividends more than one way. Cooper presence has open up things more in the passing offense not just for himself but for other teammates. First round pick LB Leighton Vander Esch has been lights out the past (2) weeks. Vander Esch has filled in nicely with LB Sean Lee sidelined, again, with more double-digit games in tackles and back to back games with an interception. He alongside that Dallas front has them only allowing only (19.0) points per game. With (3) of their last (6) division games, Dallas knows they have to bring their "A" game each Sunday.

LOOKING AHEAD:

WASHINGTON AT DALLAS: The Cowboys and the Redskins meet for the first time on Thanksgiving since 2015. A lot on the line this time around, as the NFC East lead is up for grabs. Dallas comes in with the (4th) ranked run offense. Washington is (6th) vs the run. No Alex Smith means a heavy dosage of AP. That banged up offensive line doesn't go well with a backup QB being thrown to some hungry wolves on that Dallas defense. The Redskins cannot stretch the field and the Cowboys have improved drastically on 3rd down and Dallas is #1 versus the pass. A penalty that led to a Brett Maher missed 52 - yard FG was the difference in Washington. Maher redeemed himself drilling the game winner last week for Dallas. He is (6/7) on the season with that miss in Washington being his only miss of the season.

NY GIANTS AT PHILADELPHIA: The Eagles come back home desperate for a win. After getting a drumming in the bayou they will try to beat up on a reenergized Giants team. OBJ now has (5) touchdowns in his last (6) games. Eli Manning has tossed (5) touchdowns over their past two wins and they have totaled (65) points across two weeks. Vast improvement for their (18.3) points per game they were averaging. Offensive line play will be key. As both quarterbacks have had to scramble for their lives majority of this season. Philly gets back into the groove with Ertz and I believe Golden Tate will find the end zone for his first score as a Eagle. The Giants have just one sack over the last (3) weeks of action. It won't be as bad as their first matchup (34-13) in the Meadowlands.

NFC SOUTH

FALLING FALCONS - For the most part, Falcons QB Matt Ryan has earned his $30 million this year. With a decimated defense and crumbling offensive line; Ryan has still posted (22 TDs / 4 INTs). He leads the league in passing yards total and passing yards per game. Statistical wise, Ryan has played better than his 2016 MVP season. WR Julio Jones has found the end zone in (3) consecutive games after his absence from scoring. Jones has been Ryan's favorite target as usual. Jones with (5) straight (100) yard receiving games now. The Falcons hope to get LB Deion Jones who is returning off a foot injury for Thursday's divisional showdown with New Orleans. Jones impact on the field is a huge boost for their defense if he is ready to go. Atlanta ranks in the bottom half in just about every defense statistical category. Atlanta must find a way to limit turnovers and costly mistakes on both sides of the ball but especially on the defensive end. Critical of coaching from coordinators on both sides must adjust or the Falcons will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

SAINTS SOARING - After dropping their opening game, the Saints have won (9) straight an improved to a (9-1) record and sit alone at the top of the NFC South, NFC and the NFL. As much talk about the young QB's in Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff, show some homage to the veterans. QB Drew Brees who leads the league in QBR (126.6) and completion percentage (76.9) continues to outshine the rest. Brees with (25 TDs) to just (1 INT) is outstanding, especially at this stage in his career. Head coach Sean Payton keeps dialing up the right calls and adjusting to the offense each week. Brees has a flourish of options on offense. Alvin Kamara has eclipsed (500 rec / 500 rush) yards for consecutive seasons. WR Michael Thomas recorded his (3rd) straight (1,000) yard season. While rookie WR Tre'Quan Smith busted onto the scene (10 rec / 157 yards / TD) in their blowout victory Sunday. This is the most talent the 39 year old Brees has had in his time with New Orleans. Their defense has helped out their offense over the last (2) weeks. New Orleans has only allowed (10.5) points per, (7) sacks, and (5) turnovers caused while totaling (99) points on offense in that span; the Saints have the recipe for continued success this season.

CARDIAC CATS - The Carolina Panthers fall in back to back games for the first time this season. Carolina now (6-4) knows the importance of every game moving forward. With New Orleans looking like the clear division favorite, wild card is the Panthers next option. They currently sit in that first NFC wild card spot; while after a (3) game win streak have dropped their last two games. Including that TNF old fashioned butt whooping they took at Pittsburgh, Carolina was not supposed to lose at Detroit. With their kicker missing an XP and FG earlier in the game, head coach riverboat Ron Rivera played his cards by going for two and the win. QB Cam Newton missed an open DJ Moore and the rest is history. Newton now working under OC Norv Turner has drastically improved his completion percentage, which for career is (59.9%), to (68.4%) in 2018. Newton still can be a bit inconsistent, however with a dynamic rushing attack (130.9 ypg), it has helped balance out the Panthers offensive attack. RB Christian McCaffrey is (2nd) on the team in receiving yards as they still lack a deep threat at receiver. TE Greg Olsen, Newtons favorite target, does have (4) scores in 7 games while rookie DJ Moore has asserted himself into the mix at wide out. Defensively which has been a staple hasn't been of late. No pressure and no turnovers being committed or caused is not Carolina Panthers football.

BOTTOM OF THE BAY - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers find themselves in a familiar place within the division, LAST. The Bucs have missed the postseason for (10) consecutive seasons, 2018 looks to be number 11 for the Bucs. Inconsistent play at quarterback and at head coach can spell out turmoil and dismay for a team with a lot of talent, especially on offense. Tampa Bay recorded back to back (500) yards of total offensive yards to find themselves on the opposite end of victory. Now (3-7) looking for draft status now, the Bucs go back to Jameis Winston at QB. Winston was supposed to be the future of the franchise, that is still yet to be determined however, this back and forth QB starting match between him and Ryan Fitzpatrick is a mess. You give Jameis (3) picks, Fitz will one up you with (4). Collectively the two has helped this Tampa offense lead the NFL in pass yards (361.0) and total yards (458.5) but the wins aren't resonating. Collectively Winston and Fitzpatrick have combined for (23) interceptions this season. As a team the Bucs defense has (1). The defense is atrocious, ranking dead last giving up (32.9) points per game. Tampa is (28th) in total yards given up and (28th) defending the pass including surrendering (25) passing touchdowns through just (10) weeks. Jason Pierre-Paul who came over from the Giants has (9.5) sacks, that's their defense.

LOOKING AHEAD:

FALCONS AT SAINTS: Week 3 was an instant classic between these two NFC South foes. Hatred could describe this rivalry as either the Falcons will play spoiler or the Saints keep cooking on Thanksgiving. New Orleans scored (43) in their first matchup as they have now scored (40+) in 6 games so far. New Orleans has also reeled off (9) straight wins, something they have not done since they won their first Super Bowl in 2009. Brees is (12-8) vs Ryan in their time during this duel of elite QB's. New Orleans has won two straight in the matchup dating back to last season, however Ryan is coming off one of his most impressive performances week 3 in their matchup. Saints at home, short week; tough for me to pick any team to beat NOLA right now.

NINERS AT BUCS: Jameis Winston inserted in at QB makes no difference. Until the Bucs improve front office and coaching wise, the play on the field will stay the same. San Francisco will bring a much improved run game with some explosive tight ends able to take the top off a Bucs shaky secondary.

SEAHAWKS AT PANTHERS: Last time the Panthers played the Seahawks, it was at Seattle and they got beat (40-7). A lot has changed since 2016 at least for the Seahawks, on both sides of the ball. Carolina needs a win to stay in the wild card hunt, however, so does Seattle. Whichever QB protects the ball the best will come out the victor.

NFC WEST

STILL STANDING - The Seattle Seahawks found a way to outlast Aaron Rodgers and the Packers this past Thursday Night. The Seahawks trying to get back to the playoffs after missing it the past two seasons earned a huge home win. They are now (5-5) with some pivotal matchups coming. Seattle has this run heavy first offense which leads the NFL in attempts and rush yards per game (154.3). Their triple attack at running back with second year back Chris Carson leading the way, Mike Davis, and rookie Rashaad Penny have fueled this revamped Seattle offense. Wilson is still using his legs a lot within the offense with the (RPO) most dual threat QB offenses are running but Wilson leads the NFL in touchdown passes (57) since last season. His (34) last year led all quarterbacks but his accuracy and turnover free approach has the Seahawks still vying for a playoff spot. LB Bobby Wagner is the remaining catalysts on defense as Frank Clark leads them with (10) sacks on the season. Their triple threat running attack has them in prime position for a late season run.

NINERS WINGING IT - Insert QB Nick Mullens for the San Francisco 49ers and you may say you thought Jimmy Garoppolo was under center. Mullens the 23 year old rookie out of Southern Miss has showed he can play some NFL football. Was backup now starter; Mullens watched as Jimmy G went down for the season, then CJ Bethard played just one game before he became the full time starter. Mullens has completed (70%) of his passes throwing (4 TDs / 2 INTs). Great protection has also helped the rookie out as he has yet to be sacked this season. Matt Brieda is averaging (5.6) yards per carry, while TE Greg Kittle has emerged as a viable #1 option in second year head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense. Kittle has (50 rec / 775 yards / 3 TDs) on the season. Defense is their Achilles heal this year, as they continue to rebuild their defense from the inside out.

CLIMBING CARDINALS - Head coach Steve Wilks in his first season with the Cardinals knew it would be growing paints, just trying to slow down the bleeding is all he can do now. After releasing former starting QB Sam Bradford, the Cards turned the keys over to first round draft pick Josh Rosen, Rosen still a rookie has performed mediocre at best. Bad offensive line play has not helped out the young QB. The firing of former OC Mike McCoy may has helped out some of the offensive struggles. Over the past few weeks you can say Arizona has played better on both sides of the ball. A week ago giving Kansas City fits defensively. This week finally finding some action for RB David Johnson. Johnson steamed off his first 100 yard game of the season with (137) on Sunday. Touches for the 2016 All pro have gone up and so has his productivity. Keeping teams honest with the run game will be key long term for Rosen development. He found WR Larry Fitzgerald for a pair of touchdowns and the emergence of fellow rookie wide out Christian Kirk will help Arizona, next year.

CITY OF ANGELS -  The Los Angeles Rams may lost to the Saints but they was not going to lose to the Chiefs, not at home at least. Head coach Sean McVay tried to give the game away with some crazy play calling at the end but the Rams prevailed. With one of the most wildest games in not just MNF history but NFL history was on display Monday night. The Rams defense caused (5) turnovers resulting in (21) points that included (14) points being scored by the defense alone off a INT and strip sack fumble. Aaron Donald earning all his money this season with his league leading (12.5) sacks; his (2) sacks and strip fumbles changed the tone of the game for the Rams. RB Todd Gurley was held in check for most the game, however still leads the NFL in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and yards from scrimmage. QB Jared Goff continued to shine showing his development when Gurley wasn't as effective. Goff found multiple receivers throughout the game showing his improvement week to week, while leading the Rams to (35.4) points per game an a (9-1) record so far in 2018

LOOKING AHEAD:

CARDINALS AT CHARGERS: New offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has the right idea for his rookie quarterback and that is to take the pressure off him. Giving more touches to David Johnson should open up opportunities in the passing game. Being said going up against a Chargers defense that should be coming back to full strength will be tough. Arizona only two wins on the season, hard to see their (3rd) coming this week.

SEAHAWKS AT PANTHERS: Carolina has allowed a (100) yards rushing in 4 out of 10 games this season. Stats Pete Carroll and this dynamic #1 rushing attack is thriving for. Being said, Carolina still on average gives up less than (100) yards rushing per contest. Russell Wilson has had the Panthers number while the Seahawks have had Cam Newton's. Newton is (1-4) vs Seattle in his career. If Carolina can dial up the pressure early and often to make Wilson and Seattle play catch up, bodes well for them. However, that (8th) ranked run defense need to come up with some turnovers and pressure unless they want Wilson carving them up all game.

NINERS AT BUCS: As vanilla as the Bucs defense has been all season; rookie QB Nick Mullens may find more success in his 3rd career start. If Matt Brieda can get going early in the rushing game, that should open up more opportunities for the speedy Marquise Goodwin and Greg Kittle. Tough traveling west to east especially for a 1pm kickoff.

BYE: LA RAMS

NFC NORTH

PACKING UP? The Green Bay Packers sit at (4-5-1) and though the great Aaron Rodgers has got the Packers out of worst hiccups, this season does not seem the same. Too many questions for this team, on defense especially. Special teams have not been so special as Mason Crosby is having an awful season compared to a splendid career. Green Bay just is (1-3) since their bye week, four weeks ago. Dysfunction between head coach Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers seems more prominent daily. Sources saying McCarthy could be on his way out. Green Bay has been trying to retool this defense through the draft, drafting defense in the first 2-3 rounds the last (2) seasons. The pieces around Rodgers has not been ideal, especially with a QB of his status. Green Bay with just (1) Super Bowl to their name under McCarthy/Rodgers with a (9-7) postseason record. Green Bay went through a window from (2009-2016) where they went to the playoffs every season to have gone (1-2) in conference title games with only one ring to show for it as Rodgers is your QB is not a winning recipe.

MIDWAY MONSTERS - Chicago traded for LB Khalil Mack and has reaped nothing but benefits from it. Mack leads the NFL with (5) forced fumbles while recording (8) sacks. He has helped change the culture in Chicago. His hard work is helping everyone else around him on defense as the Bears rank (4th) in sacks with 32 on the season. The Bears defense also lead the league in turnovers with (34), next closest team has (27) forced turnovers. Offensive minded head coach Matt Nagy has helped QB Mitchell Trubisky groom in year two. Chicago is scoring (29.4) points per game a major improvement from the (16.5) they averaged in 2017. Trubisky (TD/INT) ratio has drastically improved as well as the weapons they have added around him. The additions of WR Allen Robinson and TE Trey Burton alongside their dynamic running backs, its no wonder the Bears are (7-3). With 2 of their 3 divisional games at home, the NFC North is theirs for the taking.

DETROIT IS DETROIT - You never know what your going to get with the Lions. Trade away your main offensive explosion, always a new head coach, optimistic until the season starts; Detroit well it is Detroit. The Lions found out how to win again holding strong against Carolina. The Lions once again this season predicated on their defense led by DE Ezekiel Ansah who will be a free agent at the end of the season an All Pro corner Darius Slay. Lack or rushing attack however rookie RB Kerryon Johnson has been a spark to say the least. Losing WR Golden Tate did hurt as their leading receiver,  however Marvin Jones Jr has shown he is capable of a (1,000) yard season as well as second year WR Kenny Golladay. Golladay recorded his second (100) yard receiving game of the season and now has (47 rec / 714 yards / 5 TDs) this season. Detroit more than likely will finish at the bottom half of the division as I do not like Matt Patricia as a fit for head coach in Detroit.

MIRACLES IN MINNESOTA - The Vikings may had found a way last season to pull a miracle off but this season, not so much. The wildly and costly investment in QB Kirk Cousins has its risk and reward. Cousins over the last (3) games has been inconsistent at best. Just (5 TDs to 6 turnovers) over that frame. Minnesota has started off slow in games this season which has resulted in Cousins doing to much at the end and costing the Vikings dearly. Meanwhile Minnesota lost their 3rd consecutive primetime game, the loss on SNF dropped Kirk Cousins to (4-12) in primetime big games. Cousins may be top 10 in all offensive statistical categories but two pick sixes on the season and the $84 million dollar guarantee man isn't performing like an $84 million dollar guarantee man. Their defense remains a staple in their identity. The Vikings have (32) sacks on the season which ranks (5th) while Danielle Hunter has contributed to (11) of those sacks. Harrison Smith (3) picks lead the team. However, with a lackluster rushing attack that ranks second to last; I don't care that WR Adam Thielen leads the NFL in receptions and has (1,013) yards already, however, more pressure on Cousins to perform better won't help the Vikings perform better.

LOOKING AHEAD:

PACKERS AT VIKINGS: After that (29-29) tie in week 2 versus the Packers, Minnesota moved on from their kicker who then had multiple opportunities to win the game for the Vikings. Kirk Cousins outdueled Aaron Rodgers throwing for (425) yards and (4 TDs) including 3 scores in the 4th quarter which helped the Vikings erase a (20-7) deficit. Green Bay is in desperation mode searching for a win to get back into the mix for the postseason, a loss would all but cancel those plans. Minnesota got to Rodgers (4) times in September and with the rematch being in Minneapolis, the home team should have the advantage but with #12 for the Packers on the other side, you never know. Green Bay is (0-5) on the road this season.

BEARS AT LIONS: Detroit host their annual Thanksgiving matchup, this season they welcome the NFC North leading Chicago Bears. Chicago winners of (4) straight including a win versus Detroit a couple weeks ago. Detroit knows they will have to protect QB Matthew Stafford by any means. This harassing Bears defense forced (3) turnovers and sacked Stafford (6) times as it was a long day for the Detroit QB. With Bears defense healthy and at full strength, this Thanksgiving matchup may get messy before the food is warmed up. Detroit had won (3) straight versus the Bears before this season.

AFC SOUTH

HOU = 7UP -  The Houston Texans has rolled off (7) straight wins after starting the season (0-3), are now (7-3) and atop of the AFC South. One thing that can define the Texans season is resilience. During their 7 game win streak, they have won nail biters; in overtime, on the road, at home, with defense, offense and special teams. Granite, they did have some luck on their side. Frank Reich of the Colts failing on 4th down, Jason Garrett of the Cowboys neglecting to go for it on 4th down, facing Nathan Peterman, Brock Osweiler, and Blake Bortles along the way helps as well q. Second year QB Deshaun Watson had his own troubles; turnovers. The young franchise QB had a combined (14) turnovers during the Texans early season struggles but have found a way to reduce his bad habits of late. WR Deandre Hopkins is (50) yards away from consecutive (1,000) yards receiving seasons as he is on pace for double-digit touchdown season for the third time in his career. JJ Watt is tied for (4th) in the NFL in sacks. Houston defense has been forcing a number of turnovers, (14) themselves during their seven game win streak alone. The Texans defense ranks (6th) in the NFL, and across their win streak have been holding opponents on average under (20 ppg) while ranking in the top 10 in all defensive statistical categories combined with a solid running game, could have the Texans back in the postseason for the first time since 2016.

SACKSONVILLE: pop. 0 - When the Jaguars star cornerback Jalen Ramsey went down his list of trash and good QB's, he damn sure forgot to mention his own "trash" quarterback. Blake Bortles as inconsistent as it comes, with (12 TDs / 16 turnovers), Bortles has continuously showed regression at the most vital position on the field. Bad offensive line play, as Bortles was sacked (6) times as they squandered a (16-0) lead over the Steelers in route to their (5th) consecutive loss. Jacksonville has went through a flourish of injuries to their offensive line. They did get RB Leonard Fournette back. Fournette returned after missing the last 6 weeks with a hamstring injury. Jacksonville has been committed to the run since his return, while Fournette has gained (100) yards from scrimmage in each of the last two games. No real weapon in the receiving core has also limited success for Bortles. Being said, the toll that defense has taken by taking more snaps on the field has shown. Though the Jags rank (9th) in total defense and (3rd) versus the pass; their sack and turnover totals are drastically down from a season ago. Jalen Ramsey trade rumors are developing as the team traded away LB Dante Fowler Jr.; Sacksonville may be obsolete sooner rather than later.

COLTS COOKING - Andrew Luck is back to looking like the perineal MVP candidate he was a few years back before all the shoulder injuries and overturn with front office and coaching staff. Luck the benefits of a revamped offensive line, a trio of good tight ends, and new head coach Frank Reich molding Luck and this Colts offense into a powerhouse. Indy winners of (4) straight after losing (4) in a row are in prime position for a postseason run. They may be too far back to catch the Texans for the division, but a wild card spot is not farfetched. Sitting at (5-5) for the year, and looking ahead, the Colts biggest matchup will be at Houston on December 9th. Luck is (3rd - 2,769) in passing yards, (2nd - 29) in touchdowns and is on pace to break his career record of (40) touchdown passes thrown in 2014. Coincidentally the same year he was selected to the Pro Bowl and the teams last playoff appearance. Wide receiver TY Hilton is coming off a (9 rec / 155 yards / 2 TD) performance Sunday. Hilton has just (6) scores on the year largely due in part to the success the offense is having through their tight ends. Former first round pick TE Eric Ebron who came over from mediocre years in Detroit is having a career year, already with (9) touchdowns as the Colts trio of tight ends have combined for more than half of Andrew Luck's touchdown passes this year. A more established run game alongside more pressure on defense and Indianapolis will be right back into the playoff mix consistently. As of now Frank Reich has his fingers on this offense as Andrew Luck has orchestrated this Colts team right back into contention.

TITAN UP - It is a weekly theme to see Titans QB Marcus Mariota on the injury report. Mariota suffered a "stinger" in Sunday's blowout loss to the Colts. Head coach Mike Vrabel's team continues to be an inconsistent team. They win a few, then drop a couple. After stunning the Cowboys in Jerry World on MNF, then shocking the Patriots with an old fashion beatdown; they took a huge hit against the Colts. Not only Mariota was down an out so was their defense. After limiting Zeke Elliott and the Cowboys and slowing down Tom Brady and the Patriots in consecutive weeks; Indianapolis put up almost (400) yards of total offense on the Titans. Tennessee who ranks (2nd) in total defense and in points allowed (18.9), gave up (38) points to the Colts, the most they have given up all season. They never could establish the run game which is a vital part of their offense as Mariota and Tennessee never got in the flow of things. CB Adoree Jackson who is recognized as an all pro, got destroyed by TY Hilton as most of their secondary was gashed up and down the field. Tennessee now (2) games back of Houston with a matchup Monday night pivotal for both teams.

LOOKING AHEAD:

TITANS AT TEXANS: The Tennessee Titans stole a Ryan Succop field goal as time expired for a (20-17) win at home versus the Houston Texans back in week two. Since then, the Texans have went (7-1) on their way to a (7-3) record while the Texans went (.500) and sit at (5-5). QB Blaine Gabbert was in for Marcus Mariota then as he may be for MNF. This time the stakes are higher, as a win by the Texans would definitely help their cause to win the division. Indy is on the Texans trail but they know they must take care of business at home, especially a divisional game. Special teams and defense helped the Titans secure a victory then. They sacked QB Deshaun Watson 4 times that day and had (3) turnovers, however Houston has cleaned up their offensive line and Watson has toned the turnovers down excluding last Sunday vs Washington. With the stakes being this high, I believe Nuke Hopkins will have a big game as he will secure another (100) yard receiving game against Tennessee while JJ Watt and that defense will play lights out.

JAGUARS AT BILLS: Last years divisional playoff matchup between these two teams had the hype coming into it with two teams finally returning to the postseason glory to deliver us a (10-3) defensive onslaught. This year with lackluster performances at quarterback and no dominant threats at receivers for both teams; once again the focal point will be rushing the ball and defense. Look for both teams to use Leonard Fournette and LeSean McCoy often and early. Defense will be emphasized here as we look forward to another low scoring affair.

DOLPHINS AT COLTS: Indianapolis is coming off a huge (38-10) victory to even their record at (.500) on the year. The Dolphins plan to insert QB Ryan Tannehill back into the starting lineup. Tannehill hasn't played since week 5 nursing a shoulder injury. Miami went (2-3) behind Brock Osweiler as relief as they are just as much in the wild card mix as Indianapolis. However Miami struggles to score and running the ball has been as much as a disappearing act as it has been by committee. Injuries on defense has not helped either, as the Colts look to grab a home win and get to over (6-5) for the season.

AFC NORTH

BENGALS BUMMED - Another blow to the defense is not what head coach Marvin Lewis and the Cincinnati Bengals needed. Already in line to be one of the worst defenses in NFL history; the Bengals give up a league worst (449.4) total yards per game. They are allowing (31.2) points per contest as well as ranking (31st) and (32nd) against the pass and run in 2018. Head coach Marvin Lewis has taken over as defensive coordinator as things had to be changed in Cincy. They cannot get off the field on third down, no pressure on the quarterback, and a secondary that cannot cover a soul, this is why the Bengals sit at (5-5). After of course coming out the gates hot, starting (4-1); everyone was in an uproar over the Steelers poor play and the Bengals looked like the team to beat in the AFC North. However since that (4-1) start have gone (1-4), allowing (36.1 ppg) and giving up on average (504) total yards and allowed (3) straight (500) yards of total offense. Not to mention injuries decimated Cincinnati on both sides of the ball. WR AJ Green (toe) out til December, TE Tyler Eifert (knee) out for season again; while on defense Ryan Glasglow, Carl Lawson, and Preston Brown being out has taken major blows to an already demolished defense.

STEELERS STUNTING - After starting the season (1-2-1), the Steelers were being counted out, they were on a demise, fire Mike Tomlin, and more stirred up with the franchise that has won a NFL record (6) Lombardi Trophies. One thing about Pittsburgh they don't sweat, or at least let their opponent see it. With RB LeVeon Bell talks of coming back or not, how will James Conner fare, locker room disorder, Antonio Brown and Big Ben on the same page; you would had never thought the Steelers would be on a (6) game win streak. They destroyed Atlanta and Carolina, while getting revenge on Baltimore and Cleveland, they won their toughest game yet coming back (16-0) in the third quarter Sunday and sit alone at (7-2-1) in the AFC North. Across that span RB James Conner ran for (4) consecutive (100) yard games and (6) scores. The defense got back to getting after the QB, as Pittsburgh leads the NFL in sacks with (37). QB Ben Roethlisberger and WR Antonio Brown finally found their groove, and the LeVeon Bell fiasco has come to a close and Pittsburgh is focused on football and nothing else, which is scary for the rest of the league.

RUNNING RAVENS - First round draft pick QB Lamar Jackson received his first career NFL start Sunday, on the winning end of a (24-21) victory against the Bengals. Jackson ran for more yards than the entire Bengals offense as the Ravens outgained Cincinnati (265-48) on the ground. Jackson had the most rushing yards by a QB since Colin Kaepernick in 2016. His 27 carries to get their was quite a bit for a QB as know quarterback in NFL history rush the ball that many times in a single game. Jackson won't be able to continue that trend on a weekly basis. His running backs helped out tremendously as the Ravens simply pounded the rock until they could not anymore. Jackson showed composure and resilience leading them back to victory after being down (8) late in the second half and sealing it with a Justin Tucker FG. Their offense has been mid-level all season, but their defense continues to shine bright. Defense ranks #1 overall, #1 in total yards allowed, #2 vs the pass, #3 vs the run. Whether head coach Jon Harbaugh decides to go back with QB Joe Flacco or not, with the defense the Ravens have, they should will be in every game, just a matter of QB play to help determine some wins.

CALMING IN CLEVELAND: Interim head coach Gregg Williams is (1-1) an already getting threats to lose his job from, you guessed it, former Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice. Classic Browns. Anyways, the Browns found a way to beat the Falcons in week 10 before their bye week last week. Williams picked up his first win as Browns head coach behind a strong rushing attack that piled up (211) rushing yards. Cleveland has hit on their draft of late. Denzel Ward is a highly regarded corner in his first season, while DE Myles Garrett in year 2 has (9) sacks on the season which leads the team. Of course #1 overall pick QB Baker Mayfield continues to shine. Mayfield had one of his best performances yet in week 10 going (17-20 / 216 yards / 3 TDs) with 0 interceptions. If Baker wants sustained success it will come in the form of limiting turnovers. While his backfield is strong led by second round draft pick RB Nick Chubb. Chubb had a career high (176) rushing yards on just (20) carries including breaking off a 92 yard scamper in the third quarter for a touchdown. Hyde has only started 3 games this season but now has (579 yards / 5 TDs) while averaging (6.2) yards per rush; Cleveland has a formula in place as they look to finish the season strong.

LOOKING AHEAD:

BROWNS AT BENGALS: Revenge could be on the minds of former Browns head coach Hue Jackson. Jackson stint in Cleveland came short but lasted longer than most expected. He is currently helping the Bengals figure out their defensive woes. Marvin Lewis knows Cincinnati needs a win here to stay in the playoff picture in the AFC. The Browns can be playing spoiler. If Baker Mayfield can exploit that Bengals defense, they may find success, especially mixing up the run and the pass. Cleveland has not won a road game all season. Since entering the league in 2011, QB Andy Dalton has an (11-3) record vs the Browns and the Bengals have had their number winning (7) straight games dating back to 2014.

RAIDERS AT RAVENS: Oakland picked up their second win of the season Sunday versus the Arizona Cardinals. The Raiders (2) victories come at the hands of teams currently with a below (.500) record. With an offense ranked (30th); that tenacious Baltimore defense will be feasting on a Raiders team traveling east for an early kickoff. Oakland also gives up (142.3) rush yards per game which will be detrimental if Lamar Jackson is starting at QB again this week.

STEELERS AT BRONCOS: The Broncos upended the Chargers winning streak by holding on late to FG to end a (2) game losing streak. Pittsburgh has won (6) straight. Big Ben is (2-4) all time in the Mile High city against the Broncos. Denver has won the last (3) matchups at home. Their last meeting was that epic Tim Tebow playoff game where Tebow and the Broncos prevailed in the AFC divisional round (23-16). Denver has a top (10) rushing attack which they will need heavy dosages of to keep the Steelers offense on the sidelines if they want any chance at a victory.

AFC EAST

"OLD" NEW ENGLAND - After that debacle at the hands of another former assistant or player, this time Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans; the Patriots come off a bye week scratching their heads for answers. Trying to get healthy on both sides of the ball is key for New England. Major pieces on defense and offense has hindered this team all season as they try and find some consistency and continuity moving forward. Of course head coach Bill Belicheck is focused on his next opponent, the New York Jets, and is not worried about his teams porous performance at Tennessee. However, Rob Gronkowski, Rex Burkhead, Dwayne Allen, Shaq Mason and company are looking to get back on the field sooner rather than later. QB Tom Brady has not been as efficient as he would like to be. A variety of new cast members weekly in and out of his offense has not made things any easier on the 5 - time SB champ. When RB James White is your leading receiver with (66 rec / 562 yards / 6 TDs), something has to give.  Hopefully the defense can get back cranking against a winnable Jets team Sunday. Look for Sony Michel to also give a spark back to that New England team is looking for a positive.

N-E-X-T, NEXT NEXT NEXT - That seems to be the theme in the big apple of late; next season. With rookie QB Sam Darnold still out trying to recover a sprained foot, journeyman backup QB Josh McCown looks to start again for New York who are in need of a win. The Jets coming off a bye, before taking a huge loss to Buffalo. No stability on offense even with Darnold in the lineup. He has (11 TDs to 14 INTs) which is far from consistent. Darnolds (14) picks lead the NFL. Seems lightyears away since New York won their opening game at Detroit. Jets have had two (3) game losing streaks sandwiched around a couple of wins to now be (3-7). If the Jets don't score (30) or more they don't win. That is exactly how the season has played out. New Jack City defense has been getting gutted. Giving up over (400) yards of total offense 4 times while not forcing a turnover in four straight weeks is concerning. The running game has tapered off an always been running back by committee so no consistency there. Inconsistent is the word for the J-E-T-S, Jets this season. So much inconsistent, organization may be saying "N-E-X-T" to head coach Todd Bowles once the season is up.

BILLS BELOW - Rookie QB Josh Allen is set to return for the Bills this Sunday as they prepare for a home game versus the Jaguars. Allen has been recovering from a minor elbow injury. Matt Barkley started last time Buffalo played helping them to a (41-10) blowout win over the Jets. Barkley was the (4th) starting quarterback for the Bills this season. RB LeSean McCoy broke out his first (100) yard rushing game of the season in week 10 against New York. The 10 year pro seems to be the healthiest he has been all season. That bodes well for the young rookie QB Allen. With a disappointing receiving cast you can see why Buffalo ranks dead last in scoring, total yards, and passing yards offensively. No supporting cast for Allen and that Bills offense besides McCoy. However their defense ranks (1st) against the pass allowing just barely over (200) yards per. To go along with (16) forced fumbles, Buffalo will rely heavy on their defense down the final stretch to help make the development of their young QB as easy as possible.

DEACTIVATING DOLPHINS - The Miami Dolphins announced they will be going back to QB Ryan Tannehill on offense as the starting quarterback. Tannehill with an ongoing lingering shoulder injury, has been cleared to play and will start. Miami believes they still are vying for a playoff spot in the AFC. Five games against some stout defenses has me questioning that. Especially with Tannehill's lackluster performances throughout the entirety of his career. He is quite turnover prone and with a non existence running game, trying to force the ball down the field is not ideal. Though their defense has played well for the most part; they still allowing (25.6 ppg), however they are (2nd) in the NFL in interceptions with (15).

LOOKING AHEAD:

DOLPHINS AT COLTS: Ryan Tannehill has had recent success at Indy, however he has had more weapons at his disposal as well. He will try to find his groove back after being out for (6) weeks due to injury. Meanwhile the Colts sit at (5-5) too. The loser of this game will definitely be on the outside in looking into the playoff picture. With QB Andrew Luck playing some of his best football to date, look for the Dolphins to find anyway to force turnovers to help Tannehill and that offense with short fields and extra possessions.

JAGUARS AT BILLS: Playoff rematch from a year ago. CB Jalen Ramsey had plenty to say about Bills QB Josh Allen who Ramsey backed up his words this week clarifying he meant what he said about Allen being "trash." Allen hopefully doesn't take these words personally as Ramsey is still an elite corner, proving last week he still can hang with the best of them, picking Big Ben off twice. Both teams provide good defense with a solid run game that should take some of the pressure off these less than subpar QBs.

PATRIOTS AT JETS: New England has won (4) straight over the New York Jets. The Jets are reeling and have no quarterback to save some of their problems. Their defense has not been that ball hawking defense from the beginning of the season and you do not know where any production is coming from on the offensive end. New England has had their fair share of concerns this season. However, the Jets do not pose as any threat to Brady and Belicheck. 5 straight over the Jets for the Patriots come this Sunday.

AFC WEST

CONCERNED CHIEFS? Not at all. However, QB Patrick Mahomes is definitely a gun slinger. After a more than impressive (6) touchdown night for Mahomes, he forced the ball on the Chiefs final two possessions of the game as they fell short of a victory at the Rams on MNF. He is on pace to break records this season alone, and the kid has only started (12) games dating back to last year. His (37) touchdown passes thrown so far this year is the third most all time through (11) games trailing just a couple of legends in Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Monday night was his second (6 TD) passing game this season. Only two other QB's have accomplished that, the last being Rothlisberger in 2014. KC has one of the most prolific offenses in the game today. Weapons galore at Mahomes dispense. WR Tyreke Hill has (11 TDs) to go with (1,106) receiving yards. TE Travis Kelce sits at (914) yards and (7) scores.  While RB Kareem Hunt has totaled up over (1,000) yards from scrimmage and (14 TDs - 7 rush / 7 pass) in just (11) games. Their defense is their downfall. A mediocre secondary that forces their front seven led by Justin Houston and Dee Ford to produce more. They get after the ball with (36) sacks they are (2nd) in the NFL in that category. Just as I mentioned before the secondary is killing them giving up the most passing yards per game in the entire league. Mahomes must realize you live by the arm, you die by the arm. Check down, get rid of the ball or find a better option in your arsenal. One thing is for certain come playoff time you can't just be chucking the ball up like that even in todays offense friendly NFL. Being said the dude still can ball.

BOUNCE BACK BRONCOS - The Denver Broncos have lost (4) of their (6) games by (7) points or less, showing they have been playing solid football, just finishing has been the problem. Some miscues by the Chargers and Denver found a way to win versus Los Angeles on Sunday. The Broncos started the season (2-0) before dropping four straight and that is why they are now (4-6) on the year.  Head coach Vance Joseph knows his seat is getting warmer by the Sunday's. QB Case Keenum who GM John Elway personally wanted to bring in, has played worst than his Viking tenure a season ago. Taking care of the ball is a main priority in the NFL, Keenum has turned the ball over more times than he has seen the end zone. Denver has found consistency in their run game package. Centered around rookie Phillip Lindsey and fellow rookie RB Royce Freeman; Denver ranks (8th) in rushing. They released WR Demariyus Thomas after (8) plus seasons with the team. They have gone with rookie WR Courtland Sutton who has impressed many in Denver as well as WR Emmanuel Sanders continues to be a constant at the position. The Broncos defense a shell of themselves. Not the same old dominant defense were used to but the same old dominant Von Miller. Miller joins Reggie White and Demarcus Ware as the only players in NFL history to record (10) sacks in (7) of their first (8) seasons in the NFL.

CHARGING DOWN - I love Phillip Rivers. The Chargers are my dark horse in the AFC, they have been that all season but you cannot drop games at home to Broncos team you are far better than. Penalties, poor coaching and execution and you lose to teams your not supposed to in this league. Kicking woes continue to haunt Los Angeles. QB Phillip Rivers at age 37 continues to play at a high level. Los Angeles ranks in the top (10) in all major offensive categories. Although he had several turnovers Sunday, overall he has cut the turnovers in half. RB Melvin Gordon Jr is (5th) in rushing currently but has been a beast out of the backfield with (4) receiving touchdowns. With deep threat options at receiver including Keenan Allen and the Williams's - Tyrell and Mike; potential to be even better are the Chargers. DE Joey Bosa has returned in hopes at getting more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Bosa is coming off consecutive double digit sack seasons. Standout rookie safety Derwin James leads the team in tackles. James also has an interception as well as (3.5) sacks and has made his presence known all over the field and is a prime candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year. At Pittsburgh, at Kansas City, and at Denver are part of their final stretch to close out the season. The Chargers are control of their own fate as they know they can reek havoc if they are able to get into the postseason.

DA RAIDERS - Are still some trash. I don't care if they won Sunday or not, they played the Arizona Cardinals and barely won.  However for head coach Jon Gruden in another stint with Oakland, he needs all the wins he can get. Or he could just be banking on the trillion draft picks he has and continue to be bad the rest of the season. Not much to talk about with Oakland this year. They have made a mess of what was already a partly dysfunctional organization. Khalil Mack presence is deeply missed, as Oakland ranks dead last in sacks (9) and forced turnovers (10). They have no pressure up front nor good enough protection up front on the offensive end. Even with Derek Carr completing (70%) of his passes he still doesn't have many viable options to throw too. Their running game is completely gone as the Raiders are looking towards the future. One thing for sure, this season is one they will try to forget; immediately.

LOOKING AHEAD:

RAIDERS AT RAVENS: Oakland is not a team that is used to winning so you do not know what it feels like. They tasted it for a short stint on Sunday beating the Cardinals. That taste will run sour once they travel to Baltimore.  The Raiders have struggling scoring ranking (30th) in that department while Baltimore strives on holding opponents to minimum yardage and points, (1st) in points allowed this year. A long game for QB Derek Carr filled with sacks, strip fumbles, and turnovers leading to touchdowns for the Ravens defense in store.

CARDINALS AT CHARGERS: After losing to the Broncos, Los Angeles heads home to get back to their winning ways. A (6) game winning streak stopped. The Chargers knows how important wins are this time of the season, especially with Kansas City playing as well as they are. Look for Rivers, and Gordon and the offense to get back to Chargers football as the defense looks to find their way again as well.
